Blending memoir, love story, and wartime testimony, ‘The Time They Had’ is an intimate meditation on grief, memory, and resilience. Through personal recollections and the voices of those left behind, it brings Ukraine’s history and the human cost of war vividly to life. Moving and deeply humane, the book explores how love and storytelling preserve those we have lost.
The Time They Had by Don J. Snyder is based on the true story of Iryna Bordun, a woman from Kolomyia, Ukraine, whose husband and brother were both killed in the war. In the aftermath of these devastating losses, Iryna participated in The Source of Strength, a professional bereavement support program, and later completed specialized education in grief support. Today, she draws on her own journey to help other Ukrainian war widows heal after the traumatic deaths of their husbands. Iryna also supports veterans, using golf as a therapeutic tool that fosters connection, emotional healing, and renewed hope. Her story is a powerful testament to courage, compassion, and the possibility of transforming profound grief into service to others.
